THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE GOING TO A FOOTBALL GAME
-
With the availability of weather apps; take advantage. Check the weather forecast before you decide what to wear to a game. Of course, if you are sitting in a dome, make sure you know if it tends to be cooler or warmer than expected. Domes are air conditioned and heated for the comfort of the people on the field as well as the fans.

-
Leave for the stadium at least three hours before the game, (unless you are lucky enough to have a parking pass). REASON: a) finding a good parking place; be prepared to pay at least $20.00 or more to park. The price you pay is in direct correlation to the distance from the stadium and the safety of your vehicle and yourself. b) locating your seats without worrying about missing kickoff (start of game) c) watching the players during pregame warmups are so worth it. If you are tailgating, ask your host when the best time is to arrive.

Please, please, please wear comfortable shoes. You will be doing a lot of walking. From the parking area to the stadium, up and down the stairs to your seat, (depending on where your seats are, this in itself could literally be a hike up a small mountain!!), to the restroom and to concessions. If you really get into the game, you could be up and down from your seat twenty plus times. Not to mention; in any intense part of the game, no one sits!! High heels, not a recommendation. Maybe sandals or cute sneakers in the hotter months, booties or ballerina flats for the Fall, and riding boots or 2”or lessheeled boots for Winter. In fact, any shoe with a 2-inch or less heelor wedgeis highly recommended. No spike heels of any kind!!! Most women who wear inappropriate shoes, are usually barefoot by the second half.

Do not forget that you cannot carry a purse that is big enough to smuggle a water, lunch and a change of clothes to the game. The NFL and NCAA College Football has rules limiting the size of your overnight bag, aka, your purse. It can either be a very small clutch that fits into your hand; no bigger than 4.5 x 6.5. Or if you want to carry “stuff” that you absolutely cannot live without for 4-6 hours, you can purchase a clear plastic purse, no bigger than 12”x 6”x 6.” Many, many websites (Amazon among others), carry these clear purses. If this is a last-minute decision to go to a game, do not stress, you can put your “stuff” in a gallon size, zip lock freezer bag. Also, there is a security check of anything you carry into the game. No water bottles, alcohol, umbrellas, sometimes, yea, the obvious items. Every team has a website that specifically addresses the items not allowed in theirstadium.

If you want food during the game, you might want to go half-way through the second or third quarter when the lines are not so long. Going at half-time is good if you want to people watch, be seen or like the social side of waiting in lines. The same applies for the restroom. We all know what the Women’s Restrooms are like at any well attended event. One more hint; the lines for restrooms can be very long at the end of the game as well.

-
At least know these two things before you get to the game: 1) The colors of the team you are going to pull for, even you don’t wear them, you wouldn’t want to wear the other team’s colors by accident. 2) The name of the quarterback “QB”, (the one who throws the football) of the team you are there to watch. This will help you look like it is not your first game.

-
Stay for the entire game regardless of how bad your team is and try to endurethe weather unless you are really, really cold, wet, burning or dehydrated from the sun. Please, please do not forget to hydrate when it is hot(and that means lots of water, not lots of alcohol) and sunscreen. Only you know your tolerance in the heat and cold, be smart. Try to stay even if the game becomes boring, it can change in seconds to something very exciting. Sometimes your team may come back last minute and win. You never know. It’s all about what you make out of it. A bad game does not have to equal a bad experience.

-
Try to go to the bathroom before or after halftime when the line is not long. If you go during half time, the line will be long and you will miss more of the game than you should. Especially do not wait till the game is over to go. Lines are just as long, and more time spent waiting when you could be going to the car trying to get out of traffic.

TIMES TO KNOW

QUARTERS
Quarters are 15 minutes long, separated by a
12-minute break at halftime
-
Each offensive team has 40 seconds from the end of a given play until they must snap the ball for the start of the next play, otherwise they will be penalized.

-
The clock stops at the end of an incomplete pass, when a player goes out of bounds, or when a penalty is called. The clock starts again when the ball is re-spotted by an official and he blows his whistle while wind milling one arm.

If a game is tied at the end of regulation, a 10-minute overtime period will be played. First possession is determined before the period begins by a coin toss. In the NFL, the first team to score a touchdown wins, unless the team who has the ball first does not score or only scores a field-goal. Then the other team gets the opportunity to score. If this possession does not lead to a score; field goal or touchdown, then next score of any kind by either team, wins the game. If neither team has scored by the end of the first regulation overtime, or both teams are tied at 3-points (field goals), then “game-over.” It is forever in the records as a tie.
