SPECIAL TEAMS
Special Teams is a unique group of football players take the field during punts, field goals, and kick-offs. They are often called “The Suicide Squad.”
KICKER
The Kicker (K) is responsible for field goals, extra points and kickoffs. They are strong and flexible legged players who are expected to kick the football precisely from a tee on kickoffs. For field goals and extra points, the ball is snapped to another player called the holder. The holder positions the football on the ground for the K to kick, hopefully, thru the goal post.
PUNTER
The Punter (P) is responsible for kicking the ball towards the other end of the field if the offense fails to get a first down. They are also strong and flexible legged players who kick the football after dropping it from their outstretched hands.
RETURN SPECIALIST
There are two types of Return Specialist: Kick Returner (KR) and Punt Returner (PR). They are the players the Punter and Kicker are kicking to on punts and kickoffs. The KR and PR must be able to see and follow the ball coming toward him from the other end of the field. He must then catch the football while being very aware of the oncoming rush of players determined to stop him from running with it up the field.
LONG SNAPPER
The Long Snapper (LS) is responsible for “snapping” the ball back to the punter for the punt, field goal and the extra point attempt. He replaces the Center in the Offensive Line after a touchdown because the Center is not able to snap the ball the distance needed for the holder to catch and position the football for the extra point or field goal. After snapping the football, the LS becomes an Offensive Lineman. He must prevent the other team from blocking the punt, field goal or extra point.
